I've been looking at picking up some new Ray Bans, and have been debating whether to buy the standard or the "Ray Ban P" models (which have polarization). Is the extra like $30 worth it? I didn't really notice the difference in the store besides the cool blue tint on the inside of the sunglasses...

If it's a marketing gimmick, I think I'll pass, but if it actually makes a real-world difference, I think I'll give it a shot. What's the general consensus on polarization?

If your going to be in situations where there is a lot of glare (boating, fishing, skiing, etc..), definitely get polarized!

Polarized lenses work by reflecting from surfaces like a flat road or smooth water. This horizontally polarized light is blocked by the vertically oriented polarizers in the lenses. This eliminates all that annoying and potentially dangerous glare.

Most of my higher end glasses are polarized (surf instructor by summer) and it helps a lot!

Polarized sunglasses work great for long periods of outdoor use. I find that they vastly reduce stress on the eyes, and greatly reduce glare.

Glare is something you will not notice while testing on sunglasses at your local Sole Mio/Sunglass Hut. However, with time and experience, you will find glare to be quite distracting, especially when your driving your car.

Definitely worth the extra $30.

I recently got a new pair of Kaenon Polarized sunglasses and absolutely love them! They weren't cheap (around $220) but they were well worth it and I recommend them to all of my friends. Even if you don't take part in watersports, they are still great for everyday use - you don't realize how much glare you get just driving down the road!
